The US Open entered into sixth day, which is full of drama, courage and thrilling performances. Taylor Townsend has secured a thumping win over Mirra Andreeva, whereas Taylor Fritz moved into the fourth round for the third straight year.
Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jessica Pegula also advanced, assuring fans and supporters at Flushing Meadows were treated to a night of exciting tennis.
Townsend’s Emotional Triumph
Taylor Townsend lit up Arthur Ashe Stadium under the lights, beating rising veteran Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-2 to bag her place in the round of 16 for the first time in six years.
Townsend showed poise and control throughout the competition, taking charge of the second set with aggressive returns and a commanding serve.
After locking the victory the win with a strong serve that forced an error, Townsend shared her emotions in a heartfelt on-court interview.
“I want to say thank you to everyone who supported me over these last 48 hours. It’s bigger than me. It’s about the message. It’s about the representation. It’s about being bold and being able to show up as yourself. And I did that tonight. You guys saw the real Taylor Townsend tonight.”
When asked about her focus heading into the next round, she remained clear about her determination: “We’re standing on business on this team so ain’t nothing going to change. I’m going to go in the locker room, get my protein shake, get on the bike, do my rest/recovery. I have double so I hope you guys can come out and support me there but the job is not done. I’m happy with what I did tonight, but we’re standing on business and we continue here in New York.”
Fritz Overcomes Kym
Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz endured a spirited challenge from Swiss qualifier Jerome Kym before prevailing 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a tightly contested encounter. Fritz’s serving was nearly flawless, particularly in the third set where he won 93% of his first serves and hammered down four aces.
Kym, who impressed fans with fearless shot-making and resilience, pushed Fritz into long rallies and even snatched the second set in a dramatic 11-9 tiebreak. But Fritz’s composure in key moments made the difference, helping him book a spot in the last 16 where he will face Tomas Machac.
Djokovic, Alcaraz Advance
Novak Djokovic continued his astonishing run at the US Open, defeating Cameron Norrie to reach the fourth round. The Serbian star also set a new milestone by registering his 192nd win in hard-court Grand Slam matches, the most in history.
World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz also impressed, sweeping past Italy’s Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 in a display of ruthless attacking tennis.
Jessica Pegula kept American hopes alive in the women’s draw, defeating Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 7-5 with a composed performance. But it was heartbreak for Frances Tiafoe, who fell in straight sets to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff. Sixth seed Ben Shelton also retired injured against Adrian Mannarino after shoulder pain cut short his spirited contest.
Looking Ahead
With Townsend’s resurgence, Fritz’s steady progress, and Djokovic and Alcaraz maintaining dominance, the US Open has already set the stage for a gripping second week. Fans can expect even more high-stakes battles as the quest for the final Grand Slam crown of the year intensifies.
