Virender Sehwag, one of India’s most influential openers, has shared that how Sachin Tendulkar’s timely intervention prevented him from retiring prematurely from One-Day Internationals (ODIs).
Famous for his fearless batting that redefined the role of an opener, Sehwag enjoyed a smashing career, but not without its lows.
In a recent conversation, Sehwag recalled a turbulent phase during the 2007-08 tri-nation series in Australia and Sri Lanka. Despite playing the first three matches, he was dropped from the side by then-captain MS Dhoni. The exclusion left him disheartened and considering a drastic decision.
“In the 2007-08 series against Australia, I played the first three matches and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. I wasn’t picked for a while after that. Then I felt that if I can’t be a part of the playing XI, then there is no point in playing ODI cricket,” Sehwag admitted.
Weighed down by frustration, Sehwag turned to someone he trusted deeply — Sachin Tendulkar. The batting legend’s advice not only calmed Sehwag but also changed the course of his career.
“I went to Tendulkar and said: ‘I am thinking of retiring from ODIs’. He said, ‘No. I went through a similar phase in 1999-2000, where I felt I should leave cricket. But that phase came and went. You are going through a trough, but it will pass. Don’t make any decision when you are emotional. Give yourself some time and 1-2 series, and then take a call,’” Sehwag revealed.
Those words became a turning point. Encouraged to stay patient, Sehwag chose not to quit. His decision paid off as he returned strongly, delivering impactful performances that reinstated him as a key figure in India’s batting line-up. His resurgence played a pivotal role in India’s success in the years that followed, including the historic 2011 World Cup triumph.
By the time he retired, Sehwag had left behind an impressive record in ODIs: 251 matches, 8,273 runs at an average of 35.05, a blistering strike rate of 104.33, with 15 centuries and 38 half-centuries. His fearless approach at the top made him one of the most entertaining and dangerous openers of his era.
Sehwag on His Son Aryaveer’s Journey
Apart from reflecting on his own career, Sehwag also shared insights about his son Aryaveer, who is beginning to make his mark in cricket. In December 2023, Aryaveer earned selection for Delhi’s U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy squad, showing early promise as a budding cricketer.
Acknowledging the weight of expectations that comes with being the son of a cricket legend, Sehwag offered advice aimed at keeping his son grounded.

“That pressure will always be on you, but you should not take that pressure. Pressure is something that you give, not take… Hope he goes on to play either for India or the Ranji Trophy,” Sehwag said.
For Sehwag, the guidance he once received from Tendulkar has become a lesson he now passes down — whether to future cricketers or to his own son. His story is a reminder that resilience, patience, and the right advice at the right time can change everything.
