Brazil beats Colombia on penalties as Marta leads thrilling 4-4 Women’s Copa America Final

Brazil successfully defended their Women’s Copa America title in a pulsating final against Colombia, clinching victory in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 4-4 draw on Saturday. The high-stakes showdown at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado in Quito, Ecuador, showcased drama, resilience, and iconic performances from Brazil legend Marta.

Colombia seized the advantage three times throughout the match, but Brazil’s determination saw them fight back on each occasion. The first half saw Real Madrid star Linda Caicedo open the scoring with a low, close-range finish. Brazil responded in stoppage time through Angelina, who calmly converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-1 heading into the break.

The second half began with chaos as Brazil defender Tarciane scored a bizarre own goal, her attempted back pass slipping past goalkeeper Lorena. However, Amanda Gutierres leveled the contest once more with a superb chest control and volley into the bottom corner. Chelsea forward Mayra Ramirez then appeared to have scored the winner for Colombia late in regulation, but substitute Marta rifled in a stunning equalizer from long range in the sixth minute of stoppage time, sending the final into extra time.

Marta, recalled to the Brazil squad after retiring from international duty following the 2024 Paris Olympics, made her mark again in extra time. The six-time FIFA Player of the Year netted in the 105th minute from a teasing cross to give Brazil their first lead of the game. Colombia, displaying equal resilience, struck back with a brilliant curling free kick from Leicy Santos to level the score at 4-4 and force a dramatic penalty shootout.

Both teams converted four of their first six penalties, with Marta having an early chance to win the title but seeing her effort saved by goalkeeper Katherine Tapia. The shootout went into sudden death, where Brazil goalkeeper Lorena emerged as the hero by denying Jorelyn Carabali to secure a 5-4 victory.

The rollercoaster final demonstrated the growing competitiveness of women’s football in South America.

“I think women’s soccer has been growing a lot. I think the trend is for it to be more competitive. Everyone here deserved a match like this. Congratulations to Colombia too,” said Brazil forward Amanda Gutierres after the win.

“This means a lot. I think it’s Brazil’s job – it’s that mentality of never giving up. That’s a source of pride for Brazil. I think it means a lot to Brazilians.” The victory not only highlighted Brazil’s championship mentality but also reaffirmed Marta’s legendary status, delivering clutch performances in one of the most dramatic finals in Copa America Femenina history. With their resilience and composure under pressure, Brazil claimed yet another continental crown, while Colombia earned admiration for their spirited display.
