BCCI clarifies stance on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s ODI future ahead of 2027 World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given its response to the speculation over the One-Day International (ODI) future of iconic cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, amid reports indicating their international careers could end later this year. If that happens, India would be without two of its biggest players for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

With the recent England Test series wrapped up and no international fixtures until the Asia Cup in September in the UAE, speculation has intensified regarding the future of the batting stalwarts.

Reports claimed that Kohli and Rohit might consider ending their ODI careers during India’s tour of Australia in October. The same reports suggested that if the duo aimed to continue playing ODIs until 2027, they would need to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic List A competition, to remain match-ready and eligible for selection. The requirement to participate in domestic cricket could potentially influence their decision on whether to prolong their ODI journey.

However, a senior BCCI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, clarified that the board is currently not preoccupied with decisions about the long-term future of Kohli and Rohit. Instead, the immediate focus is on upcoming assignments, including the Asia Cup and preparations for the T20 World Cup next year.

“Obviously, if they (Rohit and Kohli) have something in mind, they would tell the BCCI brass like they did before the England Test tour. But from an Indian team’s perspective, the next big assignment is the T20 World Cup in February and preparations before that. The immediate focus will be on sending the best team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, hoping all players are fit and available,” the source said.

The official also stressed that any decision on the future of such high-profile players would never be made hastily. The public interest surrounding Kohli and Rohit’s careers is immense, and the board would consider multiple factors before taking any call.

Rumours about the BCCI offering the pair a farewell match in Sydney on October 25 were also dismissed. The official confirmed that no such discussions have been held.

Kohli and Rohit last represented India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year in the UAE, where the Men in Blue lifted the title. Since then, neither player has participated in competitive cricket following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League season.

For now, the BCCI remains focused on building a strong squad for the Asia Cup, ensuring player fitness, and gearing up for the T20 World Cup scheduled for February next year. Decisions on the ODI futures of Kohli and Rohit, if any, are expected to be taken in consultation with the players at an appropriate time, ensuring both the team’s competitive edge and the respect owed to two of India’s cricketing greats.
