Pio Esposito Backheel sparks Inter’s friendly victory over Monza

Inter notched their third warm-up victory after narrowly overcame Monza in a penalty shootout at the U-Power Stadium, continuing their preparations for the 2025/26 campaign.

The match, played at a high tempo, featured moments of resilience and quality from Chivu’s side as they overcame an early setback to secure triumph.

Monza struck first through Ciurria, but Inter responded when a Dimarco cross forced Birindelli into putting the ball into his own net. The turnaround was completed when Pio Esposito produced a moment of brilliance, finding the net with a clever backheel to make it 2-1. Monza, however, levelled late in the game through Azzi, forcing the match to be decided from the penalty spot. Inter held their nerve to prevail in the shootout.

The win not only extended Inter’s unbeaten pre-season run but also offered valuable signs of progress as the team worked toward full match sharpness. For Esposito, the stylish goal was a highlight.

“Tonight’s goal was a fantastic feeling,” he said. “I’m happy we managed to win, even if it came down to penalties: it helps build the winning mentality we want to create. The first games are always the hardest; they’re needed to get back into rhythm, but we did well. I play alongside some incredibly strong players from whom I can learn every day. My bond with Chivu? There’s a lot of gratitude and respect – it’s a special connection. We’ve grown together, him as a coach, me as a player; it’s a great story. What kind of Inter side is taking shape? This is a team that’s working hard and, as always, aiming to win.”

Esposito’s performance underlined his growing confidence, while his partnership with senior teammates provided a glimpse of the attacking options Inter can deploy this season.

Carlos Augusto, another standout in the game, echoed the positive sentiment while acknowledging the importance of building fitness and tactical cohesion in pre-season.

“These matches are important to be ready for the start of the season and to get some minutes in our legs,” Augusto said. “It was a great test, and we started well, focusing on being aggressive and getting the ball forward quickly – exactly what the coach is asking for. Our legs aren’t at 100% yet, but we’ll be ready for our first competitive match. I like being able to play in two positions and help the team. We are Inter, and every season we have to fight to win every competition. Last season didn’t go the way we wanted, but we want to win and will do everything possible to make it happen. Chivu is proving to be very capable. He knows how to bring the team together, and we’re training really well with the aim of enjoying a strong season.”

Inter’s next friendly will provide another chance for Chivu to fine-tune his system and assess player readiness. With Esposito in form and Augusto adapting well to tactical demands, the squad appears to be heading into the new season with growing confidence and a clear ambition to compete for silverware on all fronts.
