Alexander Isak trains alone as Liverpool transfer rumours intensify, misses Newcastle opener

Newcastle United will be without veteran striker Alexander Isak for their Premier League opener against Aston Villa, as uncertainty over his future continues to grow.

The young Swedish international has been at the centre of critical transfer buzz, with Liverpool reportedly interested in securing his signature. However, Newcastle has yet to officially accept any bid from the reigning league champions.

As speculation over a potential move gathers pace, Isak is understood to have requested to be excluded from Saturday’s fixture, expressing a desire to explore opportunities elsewhere. He is currently training separately from the club’s main squad while discussions over his future remain ongoing.

Manager Eddie Howe confirmed the decision to keep Isak out of group training following Newcastle’s recent 2-2 friendly draw against Espanyol. “We’ve had discussions and it’s clear at the moment that we can’t involve him with the group,” Howe explained. “I don’t know how long that will be for, but that’s the latest.”

Isak was a key figure for Newcastle last season, scoring 27 goals and providing six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions. His contributions included a decisive goal in the League Cup final against Liverpool, a victory that brought the club its first major trophy in 70 years. That performance cemented his place as a fan favorite and one of Newcastle’s most important players.

However, the current transfer links have cast doubt on his long-term commitment to the club. Speaking after Newcastle’s 0-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in another pre-season match, Howe stressed the importance of having players who are fully dedicated to the team.

“He’s contracted to us. He’s our player. The club make the decision on his future,” Howe said. “I don’t know what that will be. Of course, I have a preferred outcome. I want the best and strongest squad possible, but also I want players that really want to play for this club.”

The potential loss of Isak would be a significant blow for Newcastle, given his impact since joining the club. Known for his pace, technical ability, and clinical finishing, he has been instrumental in Newcastle’s attacking play. His absence from the opener against Aston Villa leaves Howe with a challenging selection dilemma as the team looks to start their campaign strongly.

While Newcastle have not ruled out the possibility of keeping the striker, the club’s stance appears to hinge on whether a suitable offer arrives and on Isak’s willingness to commit to their long-term project. Liverpool’s interest, if followed by a formal bid, could force the Magpies into a difficult decision.

For now, the situation remains fluid, with both the player and the club weighing their options in the final weeks of the transfer window. Howe’s comments suggest he is keen to resolve the matter quickly to ensure his squad is focused and unified ahead of a demanding season.

Until a decision is made, Isak will remain away from full training and unavailable for selection, leaving Newcastle fans to wonder whether they have seen the last of their prolific striker in the black-and-white shirt.
