David De Gea responds to Bruno Fernandes ahead of emotional Old Trafford return

Ahead of Snapdragon Cup clash at Old Trafford, Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea has given a playful and warm response to a cheeky message from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes,

The friendly fixture will mark De Gea’s first return to the stadium since leaving the club in 2023, and is set to be an emotional occasion for both the player and the supporters.

De Gea and Fernandes were key figures in United’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, each winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award four times – a testament to their influence on the team during their respective spells together. Having shared the dressing room from 2020 to 2023, the pair developed a close friendship and are clearly relishing the chance to meet again on the pitch.

On Wednesday, Fernandes sent his former team-mate a light-hearted video message, saying: “I hope I score some goals against you!”

De Gea, who will be in goal for Fiorentina, was quick to respond with a mix of humour and sentiment. “Hello, as you know, I’m coming home. For sure, it’s going to be a special game for me,”he said.

The Spanish shot-stopper returns to the ground where he made 271 appearances in front of the home crowd. Over his 12-year United career, De Gea played 545 matches in total, placing him seventh in the club’s all-time appearance list. His longevity, consistency, and match-winning performances made him one of the most important figures in United’s modern history.

Responding further to Fernandes’s friendly challenge, De Gea added: “Bruno, you know, you cannot score against me, and if you score, it’s because I let you score so people keep singing your name! But honestly I can’t wait to see you my friend. I can’t wait to see you all at Old Trafford, so I’ll be there on Saturday, see you soon!”

Supporters attending the game will have the opportunity to honour De Gea for his remarkable service to the club. Before kick-off, Fernandes will present his old team-mate with a special tribute recognising his contributions over more than a decade. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to witness the presentation, which will take place shortly before the match begins.

With nearly 60,000 tickets already sold for the game, a large crowd is expected to welcome De Gea back to the “Theatre of Dreams” in style. A few tickets are still available for those who want to be part of the occasion. The Snapdragon Cup promises more than just a friendly – for De Gea, it is a homecoming to the place where he built his legacy, forged lasting friendships, and enjoyed some of the most memorable moments of his career. For Fernandes, it is a chance to share the pitch once again with a team-mate he calls a friend, even if he is hoping to put a goal or two past him – with or without permission.
